Internet Safety

One of the biggest concerns of both parents and educators when it comes to introducing technology in the classroom is internet safety.

An Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) is an important document that governs students’ use of the internet at school and covers a wide range of issues surrounding the rights, responsibilities and privileges – as well as sanctions – connected with computer use.

As new technologies become more important in the lives of schools, AUPs were developed primarily to promote safe and responsible use of the internet for all school stakeholders.

Sample Acceptable Use Policy

In addition to an AUP, the following resources can help to teach children about using the internet safely.

1. Webwise

  • Webwise offers useful, practical guidelines for online safety.
  • As well as providing free resources to schools and families nationwide, Webwise co-ordinate “Safer Internet Day” where schools can submit details of their initiatives to promote online safety and get ideas from other schools around the country.

2. Scoilnet

Scolinet is a fantastic, free and safe resource for students and teachers. You can search for material and resources on internet safety by clicking on "Search Resources" tab and typing “Internet Safety” in the search box.
